Kilmory Chapel, Knapdale

The old substantial remains of Kilmory Chapel are at the hamlet of the same name at the foot of the Knapdale peninsula. To get there from either Lochgilphead or Kilmartin, head north or south respectively towards each other and take the road to Crinan. Turn up the road to Tayvallich and then after 2 miles take the narrow single track road signposted for Achnamara (2.5miles). Keep on this road for another 9 miles passing Castle Sween until you arrive at Kilmory.

This is actually the Chapel of St Mary and is a surprisingly detailed and elegant chapel for such a small community. This is an important historical site for the clan McMillan and the cross there is a very well preserved ancient cross known as the McMillan Cross. There appears to be claims that the Knights Templar used Kilmory Chapel as a refuge after their persecution in France and elsewhere in mainland Europe. However there are just as many articles (some very interesting) contradicting this theory. We will let you decide which theory is the conspiracy theory.

Kilmory Chapel

Currently the Chapel is in the capable hands of Historic Scotland. There is no charge to enter the Chapel or grounds.

The chapel only a couple of miles from the ancient Castle Sween. You should make the time to visit the castle and perhaps the restaurant beside it.
